THE FLANNAN ISLES LIGHTHOUSE
Scotland, 1900 A relief crew arrives at a remote lighthouse. Three keepers — experienced men — are gone. The last meal on the table, half eaten. One chair knocked over. The clock stopped. The lighthouse log ends mid-entry. No bodies ever found. No explanation ever given.
On December 26, 1900, the relief vessel Hesperus approached Flannan Isles.
The lighthouse had been dark for eleven days.
No signal. No response. No explanation.
The crew assumed bad weather had delayed the keepers.
They assumed wrong.
When they landed, the door was unlocked.
The last meal was on the table. Salted meat. Pickles. A single overturned chair.
Three men had been stationed there. James Ducat. Thomas Marshall. Donald MacArthur.
All experienced. All reliable. Ducat had twenty years on the light.
They were gone.
No coats on the hooks. No sign of struggle. No note.
The lighthouse was in perfect working order.
The light just wasn't on.
