Australia, 1978 A family of six vanishes from their home overnight. Breakfast on the table. Car in the driveway. A neighbour heard nothing. A single note found that made no sense. They were never found. No bodies. No trace. Nothing.
I got the call on a Monday morning. July 17th, 1978.
Family of six. Not home. Neighbour raised the alarm.
I drove out expecting a misunderstanding.
The kind of thing that sorts itself out before lunch.
The house was unlocked.
Breakfast on the table. Toast. Eggs. Orange juice poured.
Six chairs. Six settings. Food still warm when the first officer arrived.
The car was in the driveway.
Both cars, actually. They hadn't taken either one.
I walked through every room.
Beds made. Clothes in the wardrobes. Shoes by the door.
A family of six had sat down to breakfast and left without finishing it.
Without taking anything.
Without making a sound.
The neighbour's house was forty feet away.
She heard nothing.
