Chasing Shadows: The Reporter’s Descent

Vlado Taneski walked through Kičevo’s narrow streets as the late afternoon sun spilled over red-tiled roofs.

His black leather coat hugged his frame, and

the notebook in his hand carried the weight of words that could inform a city—or conceal its darkest truths.

He greeted a few neighbors with a polite nod.

To the townspeople, he was a devoted journalist, the man who would uncover injustices, tell human stories, and

illuminate the tragedies that no one else dared to approach.

"No one suspects a thing,"

he whispered to himself, the smile curling on his lips almost involuntarily.

His apartment was small, neat, almost painfully ordinary.

Yet it contained the pieces of his true self: notebooks filled with sketches of crime scenes, detailed accounts

of his victims’ routines, and plans for the next act.

In the reflection of his mirror, he did not see the kind, quiet journalist—he saw a shadow, a puppeteer pulling strings

no one else could see.
