The Door You Never Opened

Every door in this waiting room leads to a life you almost started. One has been waiting for you for eleven years.

You wake in a hospital waiting room with a ticket in your hand: 11 YEARS.

The nurse checks it.“That is how long you have been waiting to start.”

Nobody here is sick. Every door is labeled with something you keep calling later.

The door opens before you touch it.

Someone is sitting on the floor inside.

You recognize yourself before they look up.

Younger. Restless.

Still certain your life is about to begin.

They are holding something you once cared enough about to start badly.

Younger you looks past you.

“Did we become good at it?”

You cannot answer.

“Okay.”

They swallow.

“Did we at least try?”

That question hurts more.

Because failure was never the thing you spent eleven years avoiding.

It was finding out what happened if you gave everything and still were not enough.

Younger you looks toward the waiting room.

“So we stayed here instead?”

On the wall behind them, the clock has no hands.

They look back at you.

“How much longer are we waiting?”

You stare at the empty space beside DOCTOR.

“Who am I waiting for?”

Mara takes off her badge.

“No one.”

Your stomach drops.

“There has never been a doctor here.”

Around you, people keep staring at their numbers like permission might arrive.

Eli is still sitting down.

His number has already been called.

He is waiting anyway.

Younger You walks to the door you were afraid to open.

“I was never waiting for you to become fearless.”

“I was waiting for you to come back.”

Behind you, the ticket machine suddenly prints again.

Your new ticket reads:

12 YEARS.

Mara looks at the chair you are still standing beside.

“Sit down, and tomorrow becomes another year you were almost ready.”

You were never waiting for your life to begin.

Your life was waiting for you to stand up.
