The Cop Who Kept Prisoners in Jars
Everyone trusted Officer Kane. Nobody knew what was waiting in the woods.
At 11:43 p.m., Harry arrests a drunk driver and tells you he is taking him to jail.
At midnight, you check the booking log. The man was never brought in.
Then Harry’s patrol car turns away from town and disappears into the woods.
The branch cracks beneath your boot.
Harry stops.
So does the screaming.
For one second, the whole forest feels like it is listening.
Harry turns toward the trees.
You do not move.
Then he looks back at the prisoner.
He opens an empty bottle.
The man starts begging before Harry even touches him.
The glass is smaller than Harry’s hand.It should be impossible.
Harry presses the bottle against the prisoner’s chest.
The man folds inward. His scream shrinks with him.
Then the scream comes from inside the bottle.
Harry screws the lid shut.
Something tiny slams against the glass.
Harry writes the prisoner’s name across the bottle.
Then he places it beside dozens of others.
You recognize the names.
Every one belongs to someone Harry arrested.
Nobody disappeared after leaving jail.
None of them ever reached jail.
Then Harry speaks into the darkness.
“You can come out now, Justin.”
The chief twists the lid.
Every bottle on the shelf starts shaking.
Then the first jar screams.
The glass cracks from the inside.
A man collapses onto the hut floor.
He is wearing the same clothes from the night Harry arrested him.
He thinks only minutes have passed.
Police check the name on the bottle.
He disappeared six years ago.
Then another bottle begins pounding.
And another.
Hundreds of missing prisoners are still alive inside the glass.
Justin finally understands why Harry never wrote reports.
Jail was never where he kept criminals.
The hut was.
Officers start reading names from the shelves.
Drunks. Thieves. Men nobody bothered looking for twice.
Then Justin notices one bottle hidden behind the others.
Unlike the rest, it is covered in dust.
The name written across it is Harry Kane.
The date beneath his name is 1947.
Harry did not become a police officer until years later.
Something inside the bottle slowly opens its eyes.
If the real Harry Kane has been trapped in that jar since 1947, then Justin has no idea what wore his badge.
