Three Days After Her Death
Seventeen years after Lena Voss was murdered, I find a photo of her alive three days later. My aunt is standing beside her.
The woman in this photograph has been dead for seventeen years.
I know her face.
This town grew up seeing it beneath the word
MURDERED.
But here she is outside the Briar Motel,
alive,
staring straight into your aunt's camera.
The date burned into the corner is three days after police found her body.
Then i see the reflection in the motel window.
My aunt is standing beside her.
I turn the receipt over again.
Lena
Beneath her name,
someone scratched through another so hard the paper nearly tore.
I hold it against the lamp.
The ink is gone.
The pressure marks are not.
Nora Finch.
I find her name in the old case file.
She was working the Briar Motel the night this photograph was taken.
Her police statement says she never saw Lena.
But this receipt has Nora's signature at the bottom.
Three days after Lena was supposedly dead.
Your phone rings.
Vale does not even say hello.
"Whatever you found, do not ask Nora Finch about it."
I study the second photograph.
Lena is smiling.
The woman beside her is wearing Lena’s coat.
The same coat police photographed on the body.
My chest goes cold.
Her name was Maya Reed.
She vanished the exact night Lena supposedly died.
No DNA identified the body.
Just Lena’s clothes and a mother too shattered to question what she saw.
Nora looks at Maya’s face.
“That is who they buried.”
My stomach drops.
“Lena knew?”
Nora looks away.
“She watched them call Maya by her name and stayed dead.”
Lena did not survive her murder.
She survived by letting Maya become the victim.
Then I find an envelope with my name on it.
Inside is Lena, older now, standing outside Evelyn’s funeral two weeks ago.
She is looking straight at the camera,
like she already knows I found her.
