I Found You After I Lost You
Tavi and I meet again after twelve years and realize we finally know how to love each other. We are simply no longer each other’s future.
Five years after I lose Tavi, they sit across from me wearing a ring I did not give them.
The cruel part is that this is the first time loving them feels easy.
Then Tavi looks at me and says, “I wish we had met each other like this the first time.”
If Tavi and I met tonight, I know exactly what would happen.
I would choose them. And five years ago, I did.
We just did not know how to stay chosen.
Back then, every disagreement felt like proof we were wrong for each other.
Every silence became a threat.Every fear arrived dressed as certainty.
Tavi looks at me now and smiles softly.
“You finally learned how to say what hurts before it becomes anger.”
I almost laugh.
“You finally learned how to stay when things get uncomfortable.”
Neither of us laughs after that.
Because these are the exact people we begged each other to become.
We just became them without each other.
Tavi turns the ring once around their finger.
“They never had to survive the version of me you did.”
I look away.
“You never got the version of me they get either.”
That is the part that hurts most.
Someone else gets the love we spent years teaching each other how to give.
Tavi looks at the ring, then back at me.
“There was a time I would have chosen you again.”
My chest goes still.
“How long?”
Tavi does not answer immediately.
“Longer than I am proud of.”
“I kept thinking you would come back once we became better people.”
That sentence hurts because I did the same thing.I just never knew Tavi was waiting too.
“So what changed?”
Tavi looks down.
“I realized I had built my whole future around someone who was not in it.”
“I loved you.”
“But eventually, waiting for you became another way of refusing my own life.”
I look at the ring again.
For the first time, I do not hate it.
Someone else did not steal the future that belonged to me.
Tavi finally allowed that future to belong to someone who was there.
“Are you happy?”
Tavi smiles.
“Yes.”
That answer breaks my heart more cleanly than any rejection could.
Because loving Tavi means I cannot wish their happiness had waited for me.
Maybe some people are not meant to return to us.
Maybe they return so we can finally understand what they gave us.
We finally became the people who could have loved each other well.
Just not in the life where we still belonged to each other.
Tavi stands to leave, then stops.
“There is one thing you should know before I go.”
“I waited for you for seven years.”
