Three years after I leave Ren, I take our anniversary train alone.

The conductor sees the empty seat beside me and quietly says, “So it finally happened.”

Then they hand me an envelope. “Ren said I could only give you this if you came back alone.”

I unfold the letter with hands that suddenly feel too young.

Ren’s handwriting has not changed.

“If you are reading this, then you finally came back without me.”

My chest tightens.

“I know what you probably told yourself about us.”

“That I loved you carefully.”

“That you loved me more.”

The train moves, but everything inside me stops.

“You were wrong.”

“I pictured mornings with you. Bad years with you. Growing old enough to become boring with you.”

I have to look away from the page.

Because that was the future I kept asking Ren to prove they wanted.

They had been living inside it the whole time.

“I would have changed cities for you.”

“I would have started over with you.”

“I would have chosen you again.”

Then one sentence cuts deeper than all of them.

“But I could not keep proving my love every time your fear forgot it was there.”

I reach the last paragraph.

“If you came back alone, you are probably still wondering whether I really loved you.”

My eyes burn.

“I did.”

“Enough to picture a whole life you kept asking me to prove I wanted.”

“Enough that leaving you broke something in me too.”

Then comes the sentence I spent three years needing.

“I would have done almost anything to make you feel loved.”

“But I could not spend our whole life convincing you that I meant it.”

The empty seat beside me becomes unbearable.

I finally believe Ren.

Three years too late. The last lines are smaller.

“Please do not make losing me proof that nobody will stay.”

“Let someone love you without making them survive an audition for your trust.”

I close the letter.

For years, I thought Ren failed to make me feel safe.

Now I see how often I asked love to guarantee something no love can guarantee.

That it would never end.

I left before Ren could leave me.

And called the emptiness proof that I had been right.

Jules sits across from me.

“Ren came back last year.” Hope rises before I can stop it.

Jules sees my face.

“They were not alone.”

Outside the window, the little house Ren and I used to point at appears above the coast.

Jules whispers, “Ren bought it.”

I almost smile until Jules finishes.

“They move in next month with the person they are going to marry.”
