Last Stop
She was the only one who made it out.
38 people boarded the 11:45. 38 died before the last stop. She wasn't on the manifest. They found her in seat 14 anyway.
Cole sat across from her. Same train. Same carriage. Mara stared at the dark tunnel like she'd seen it before.
Like she'd been waiting for him specifically.
"Walk me through it."
"I already did. Three times."
"Fourth. Humour me."
She turned slowly.
Lights out. Noise. Then silence. Between the noise and the silence — they were just gone.
No mechanical failure. No single cause of death. 38 bodies. Every way a body can fail. Mara — not a scratch.
Not even a torn hem.
"Your ticket wasn't scanned. No CCTV. No record."
He slid the tablet across. Every passenger.
Every face. Forty minutes of footage. She wasn't on it.
"And yet here I am"
How long have you been working this case? Eleven days. And before that?
Still. Antiseptic smell. Before was just — gone.
"There was no survivor"
"The report lists one"
Who called you about this case?
He reached for the voice on the phone. All he could hear was his own name.
Being said exactly like she was saying it now.
You were on the 11:45 Seat 14. Carriage four.
He turned to the manifest.
Between CALLOWAY and CHEN — COLE, J. Seat 14. Carriage 4. Status: deceased.
The file hit the floor. It made no sound.
"Who are you?"
"The one they send when someone won't let go."
"Let go of what?"
"The case. The train. The idea that you're still working."
She stepped onto the platform.
There's nothing to solve. There never was.
The doors closed. The train didn't move. Cole sat in carriage four. Seat 14. Alone.
Finally understanding — why the last stop has no passengers.
