The House They Chose For You
You wake inside a beautiful house where every room was chosen by someone else. One locked door has your name on it
You wake up in a beautiful house you do not remember choosing
Every room has a brass plaque with someone else’s name
Your parents chose the office
Someone you loved chose which parts of you were allowed to stay.
At the end of the hall, one locked door has your name on it.
The voice comes again from behind the door
“I kept waiting for you.”
You reach for the handle.
Locked
“Who has the key?”
The Caretaker looks at you.
“You have asked that question your whole life.”
Then they point to your pocket.
Your hand closes around something cold.
A key.
The Caretaker says nothing.
Behind the door,
your younger voice whispers,
“They taught you what to fear.”
“But you were the one who kept locking me in.”
You step inside.
The room is empty.
No dream career.
No perfect relationship.
No version of you finally approved by everyone.
Just a mirror.
Your younger self stands beside you.
“Disappointed?”
You expected this room to tell you who you were supposed to become.
That is exactly what every other room already did.
Behind you, the plaques begin falling from the doors.
Parents. Friends. Strangers. People you once loved.
Their names hit the floor.
Your younger self looks at you.
“They gave you their fears.”
“You turned them into rules.”
You look into the mirror again.
For once, there is nobody beside your reflection.
Nobody approving.
Nobody disappointed.
The empty room suddenly feels enormous.
Not because you have nothing.
Because nothing has been chosen for you yet.
Your younger self smiles.
“Now you understand why I kept this room empty.”
A life can look perfect from the outside
and still belong to everyone except you.
